2. Special Classes in December on Wednesdays – Collegiate Shag (guest instructor) and Lindy Rueda

We have a really special opportunity to take Collegiate Shag classes from champion shagger Amanda Pincock. She will be visiting from Austin Texas next week, and will be teaching two Collegiate Shag classes on Wednesday, December 4th. HERE is a little clip of Amanda in action.

December 4th – Amanda will teach both an Intermediate Collegiate Shag class from 6-7 PM (Must know the basics to take this) and a beginning class from 7-8 PM (in place of our Lindy Hop series class). Each class is $10 (if you are in the intermediate class, we encourage you to stay for the beginning class free of charge). We will hold a drop-in Jitterbug class as usual at 7 PM, as well as dancing to follow.

Lindy Rueda (2 week series- Dec. 11th & 18th) – We are excited to share Lindy Rueda again this year on December 11th and 18th at 7 PM. This is a group/partner dance… we use called Lindy Hop moves to switch partners. It’s lots of fun, and only requires knowledge of the Lindy Hop Swing Out to participate. HERE is a clip of one of our past Rueda classes performing. Cost is $10 per class, $7 for students.

IF YOU REALLY WANT TO PARTICIPATE but don’t know the Swing Out (Lindy Hop basic step), we will teach a crash course from 6-7 PM on December 11th to get you up to speed. If you plan to come to that, please let Clay know so he can plan accordingly (you can reply to this email).

We will also have Jitterbug Class and social dancing both of these weeks.

3. Blues Dancing – Little City Blues – Thursday, December 19th

We had such a fun time with our blues crew in November that we got talked into doing a blues dance in December!

Join us at Plaza Maya (1644 S Wells in Reno) on Thursday, Dec. 19th. Lesson starts at 7 PM with dancing following from 8-10 PM. This dance has no cover charge, but donations will be accepted… and we would love for you to support our venue by purchasing some food or drink. IN FACT, They are extending Happy Hour specials to us throughout the event (cheap street tacos, 2-for-1 margaritas, and more).

4. Holiday Swing Dance Schedule

As we mentioned, we ARE dancing TONIGHT. We will also hold dances the first 3 Wednesdays in December (Dec. 4th, 11th and 18th) – see Item #3 for details on special classes.

We will be CLOSED on December 25th – no swing dance on that Wednesday.

We will be OPEN on Wednesday January 1st with lessons and dancing.

We will hold a blues dance at Plaza Maya on December 19th.

We will NOT have a Taco Hop on the last Tuesday of December.

1. The Taco Hop – Swing Dancing Tuesday July 30th @ Plaza Maya – 1644 S Wells (Reno) at 7 PM

We’ll be swing dancing tomorrow night at Plaza Maya. Lesson at 7 PM, dancing from 8-10 PM. All ages, no cover charge. Just bring a few bucks to support Plaza Maya, who is extending happy hour specials to us for the event (which includes $1 street tacos, 2-for-1 margaritas and bottled beer, and more). Their full restaurant menu is also available.

NEXT TIME: Taco Hop will next happen on August 27th.

2. Swing Dance Field Trip – THIS Wednesday July 31st – Squirrel Nut Zippers Show! Show starts at 7:30 PM

THIS Wednesday, July 31st, The Squirrel Nut Zippers are playing a FREE show at Wingfield Park. Instead of our normal Wednesday night dance, we’ll be taking a field trip to go dance to the Zippers. Show starts at 7:30 PM – we’ll be dancing and passing out cards to promote our swing dance at Wingfield Park. If you have a Reno Swings! T-Shirt, wear it!

3. Lindy Hop Series starts Wednesday Aug. 7th at 7 PM”Lindy Hop – The Swing Out” – 4 Week Series Class – Come learn Lindy Hop with us! Lindy hop is the grand-daddy of swing dances- smooth, improvisational, creative. We will be focusing on the swing out and other 8-count patterns that form the base of Lindy Hop. This is a 4 week series – DISCOUNTED $35 passes are available online HERE. 

Pre-requisite: At least 6-8 weeks of Jitterbug class (or equivalent experience). No previous Lindy Hop experience required.

This is a 4-week series that starts August 7th – Come a few minutes early to get signed up, or use the link above to reserve your spot online (with a discount).
AND OF COURSE… we also are continuing the weekly drop-in Jitterbug class, plus social swing dancing afterwards (from 8ish PM to 9:30 PM), and social blues dancing from 9:30 on.

1. The Taco Hop – Swing Dancing May 28th @ Plaza Maya – 1644 S Wells (Reno) at 7 PM AND again Tuesday June 25th

We’ll be swing dancing June 25th at Plaza Maya. Lesson at 7 PM, dancing from 8-10 PM. All ages, no cover charge. Just bring a few bucks to support Plaza Maya, who is extending happy hour specials to us for the event (which includes $1 street tacos, 2-for-1 margaritas and bottled beer, and more). PLEASE NOTE: We have changed this dance from the FIRST Tuesday of each month to the LAST Tuesday of each month from here on out.

“Charleston” – 4 Week Series Class – Come dance Charleston with us! Charleston was the pre-cursor to swing dancing, but was also integrated into swing dancing. This is a 4 week series DISCOUNTED $35 passes are available online HERE. 

Pre-requisite: At least 6-8 weeks of Jitterbug class (or equivalent experience). No previous Lindy Hop or Charleston experience required.

It’s a 4-week series that starts March 6th. December 2018 Swing Dance Update

Reno Swing & Blues Update December 2018

CONTENTS
1. Wednesday Swing Dancing – December Schedule & Balboa Class

1. Wednesday Night – New Balboa Class starts this week!

There will be swing dancing every Wednesday in December… but we will only run a series class for 3 weeks. Drop-in Jitterbug class will continue each week, and we will make ourselves available for Lindy Hop practice and informal instruction during the 6 o clock hour.

6 PM Intermediate Practice – We open the hall up a little early for intermediate guided practice. It is designed for experienced dancers to come work on your dancing (dancers who already have taken several months of Lindy Hop). We will make ourselves available to help with topics or skills of your choosing.

7 PM “Balboa Basics” – 3 Week Series Class – We’re excited to share a Balboa Basics class. Balboa was developed in the crowded ballrooms of Balboa Island… its a compact dance that is well adapted to medium and fast tempo songs. A great addition to your swing dance repertoire. The cost for this 3 week class will be $30 general, $20 for students… payable at the door.

Pre-requisite: At least 6-8 weeks of Jitterbug class (or equivalent experience). No previous Balboa experience required.

7 PM Jitterbug Class – Open to everyone… no partner or experience necessary. We’ll breeze through the basics and get you up and running quickly… then we’ll take you through 3-5 different moves each week. This class is drop-in. $10/General and $7/Students each week (includes social dancing which follows). NEW – you can buy a discounted 4 week pass online HERE.

8 PM Social Dancing – we’ll spin the tunes for dancing and practicing what you learned in class. If you can, stay and play with us!

9:30 PM Blues Dancing – Toward the end of the night, we’re going to slow it down and play some blues music for blues dancing.

3. Swing-N-Hops on hiatus
So you probably heard that Under The Rose has closed, so we are left without a venue for our monthly Swing-N-Hops dance. We are looking for an alternative, and will announce it as soon as we have secured a new location.
