2. Halloween Dance!
Halloween falls on the 5th Wednesday of October this year. We took an informal poll, and the consensus was that we should dance! So here is the plan – same price as always – $10 genera and $7 students.

– 7 PM – Shim Sham Swing Line Dance Class – The Shim Sham Shimmy is a swing line dance that we do almost every week. Here is your chance to learn it (or brush up on it)! This is an all levels class, no experience or partner necessary. – 8 PM – Social Dancing, with lighting, costumes, treats, and some swingin’ Halloween music.
– 9:30 PM – Blues Dancing

3. Blues Update

REMINDER:Since we are taking a break from our weekly blues dance, we thought that we should play some music for blues and fusion dancing toward the end of our weekly swing dance. So from about 9:15 or 9:30 on, we’ll play music for blues dancing. No charge… just come get your blues dancing fix each week. Location details are under #2 above.

ALSO

UPDATE: We have been scheming and discussing, and believe that going forward, the right solution may be a monthly blues dance (with a robust lesson) on a Thursday night, plus weekly blues social dancing on Wednesdays after swing dancing. We are still nailing down the details, but feel free to give us your input on this idea. I know that our blues dance community has been asking for more than what we are currently doing… we hope that this format can find the right balance of providing blues dancing and blues dance instruction, while not overloading the organizers.

4. GET FUN RENOSWINGS! T-SHIRTS
Check out our next RenoSwings! T-Shirt design. We’ll be sporting them at our events this week. If you’d like to get one, you can order in your preferred size and color HERE. They are also available in long sleeve and hoodie options.

Thanks so much! We’ll see you on the dance floor!

2. SHIM SHAM SHIMMY
Pretty much every week at our Wednesday RenoSwings! dance, the dancers dance the Shim Sham Shimmy (sometimes just called the Shim Sham), a swing-era jazz line dance. You can see it HERE

As our series class is a 4-week series, and this month has 5 Wednesdays, we will be holding a special Shim Sham Class on Wednesday, May 30th.

This class will be at 7 PM, and is open to all dancers of all levels. Cost is the same as normal – $10 per person/$7 Students.

Hope to see you there!

What is blues dancing? Blues is a simple yet creative partner dance. Here in Reno, we dance a form that is informed by the historic forms of blues dancing, but not limited to them. We also dance “fusion”, a mixture of blues with other dance elements.

HERE is a video made by a former Reno dancer, Joe Gray, of Fusion Dance Life that captures the feeling of Fusion dancing.

Sacramento Lindy Hop Workshop Special Deal
On March 24th, a great pair of teachers from Arizona, Dabney and Karen Hopkins are coming up from Arizona to teach a Lindy Hop Workshop. One of our swing dancers, Alison, has worked out a special deal with the organizers for a reduced price of $40 (normally $50) per person for Reno-area dancers, as well as help finding a place to crash if needed. For the special deal, you’ll need to message Alison or the Wolf Pack Swing Dance Club as they are still working out final details. There may be carpools going over the night before (Friday) to dance at Midtown Stomp.

BONUS….
WORLD DOMINATION PLAN STEP 1 – SOCIAL MEDIA BLITZ
We have a dream to see vintage partner dancing absolutely take over Reno and Northern Nevada. We really feel like Reno Lindy Hop and Reno blues dancing could be something really special. It’s growing, but we’d like to supercharge that growth. So we have an idea – will you help us?

For the next 4 weeks, we want to blitz Facebook and other social channels with our events. If you’ve got a Facebook account, we’re asking you to RSVP to our events… as well as like, comment and particularly share them. If our dances show up over and over, we believe that it will build positive momentum and grow our numbers quickly.

Facebook, like it or not, is like high school. The popular kids get all the attention, so the more you interact with us, the more people will see out stuff!

So if you can, please take a moment to interact and share our events. Let’s see if we can make them show up everywhere and get a bunch of new people to join us.

Reno Swings! Format Changes

We are kicking off the new year with a new format for our Wednesday night swing dance.

WHAT IS STAYING THE SAME?
We will still be offering our drop-in Jitterbug class at 7 PM, followed by social dancing afterwards (around 8 PM). This class will still be open to brand new dancers… no pre-requisites and no partner needed. Cost is $10 per class (includes social dancing) and $7 for students.

WHAT IS NEW?
We will be offering a progressive (month-long) Lindy Hop class ALSO AT 7 PM (we will be using both rooms). Lindy Hop is a bit more intricate than Jitterbug, so we are offering it as a 4-week series starting the first week of each month. Additionally, this class has a pre-requisite that you have taken 2 months (8 weeks) of Jitterbug classes… this will help the class move faster, as we will be building on the techniques that we teach in Jitterbug. This class costs $40 for the series (4 weeks), $25 for students. We allow drop ins the first week of the month ONLY with this class. Social dancing is also included.

What is Lindy Hop, you ask? Here is a short video explanation: What is Lindy Hop?

WHAT IS HAPPENING AT 6 PM?
We will be opening up the hall for a guided practice for experienced dancers between 6 and 7 PM. PREREQUISITE: this practice is designed for dancers who have taken at least 2 months of Lindy Hop classes – it will provide opportunities to fine tune and continue progressing beyond Lindy Hop basics. There is no charge for this practice session IF you are attending one of the 7 PM classes. As a stand alone, the cost is $5 per practice.

GENERAL INFO

Reno Swings! is held at the American Legion Hall at 877 Ralston St. in Reno. Map here

We accept cash, check or credit card at the door. We recommend wearing comfortable clothes and shoes, and we don’t recommend big heels.
